CHA Volunteers

Help New Yorkers understand their health insurance and access the health care they need! Our volunteers assist New Yorkers whether on Medicaid, Medicare, commercial insurance, or uninsured. By staffing our toll-free statewide helpline, volunteers provide direct one-on-one assistance to individuals and families and make a difference in real peoples’ lives! Learn more and apply.

Internships

CHA hosts undergraduate, graduate, and legal interns for fall, spring, and summer internships. All internships are unpaid, but CHA is able to work with students seeking academic credit.

Undergraduate and Graduate Internships

Interns will work closely with CHA staff to advocate on behalf of New York health insurance consumers. Interns will: receive training on New York health insurance programs and New York health insurance law; provide direct service and advocacy to clients on CHA’s consumer assistance helpline; and be paired with a CHA staff member to assist with project research, analysis, or other duties as needed. Learn more and apply.

Legal Internships

This internship is a hands-on opportunity for law students to gain exposure to health law and policy, and work with practicing attorneys to advocate on behalf of consumers. Intern duties may include conducting legal research, drafting internal and external appeals, handling direct client service work, and drafting consumer-facing know-your-rights materials. If possible, legal interns will assist in representing clients in Medicaid Fair Hearings and New York State of Health Marketplace appeals. Learn more and apply.

Pro Bono Legal Volunteers

Help New Yorkers understand their health insurance and access the health care they need. Community Health Advocates (CHA), New York’s designated health insurance Consumer Assistance Program, helps New Yorkers get, understand, use, and keep their health insurance and access affordable health care. CHA operates a statewide helpline and provides advocacy and representation services to consumers to protect their legal rights. Learn more and apply.
