Volunteer with CHA!

Community Health Advocates (CHA) operates a daily live-answer consumer assistance helpline at the Community Service Society of New York. The helpline is answered by staff and volunteers. Together, we work as a team to help thousands of New Yorkers with questions and problems regarding health insurance and health care access and medical bills.

CHA volunteers go through a multi-day intensive training where they learn the basics of health insurance, both public and private, and how to answer New Yorkers’ questions. By the time a volunteer is taking their first call, they are equipped with enough information to provide in-depth assistance to consumers. Volunteers are always supported by the helpline supervisor, who works with them to help answer questions and resolve issues.

The helpline currently operates on a hybrid model Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Our volunteering schedule is Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We are flexible with scheduling and are actively looking for volunteers who want to help.

If our program seems like a good fit, please complete our CHA Volunteer Application and email it, along with your cover letter and resume, to healthvolunteer@cssny.org. We will review applications prior to the start of the next volunteer training class and reach out to selected candidates to discuss the program and volunteer opportunities in more detail.

CHA can help answer your healthcare questions.
